FAQ

Short answers to the questions people ask most about Hop.

Is Hop free?

Yes. Hop is free and open source under the MIT License, with no account, no ads and no paid tier. See About Hop.

Which systems does Hop run on?

Windows 10 (1809 or newer) and Windows 11, 64-bit, and Linux: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint, Pop!_OS, Debian, Fedora, and most others through the AppImage, on X11 or Wayland. There is no macOS version: Macs already have their own notch.

Windows warned me about the installer. Is it safe?

Windows shows that box for installers that aren't code-signed yet or that few people have downloaded so far. It doesn't mean anything was found in the file. Is Hop Safe? shows the VirusTotal scan and how to check the download yourself.

What does Hop send over the internet?

Only what its features need, like the weather for your city or song lyrics. There is no tracking and no account. The Privacy Policy lists every service Hop talks to.

Will the clipper slow down my games?

It is built to stay light on the GPU so games keep their frame rate. If a game does run slower, lower the clip quality or frame rate: see Troubleshooting.

Where are my clips?

In Videos\Hop Clips on Windows and ~/Videos/Hop Clips on Linux, in a folder per game. The newest ones also show on the island. You can pick another folder in the settings.

Can I use just the island, or just the clipper?

Yes. The installer lets you pick either one, or both. They work on their own and a little better together.

Can I change the F8 key?

F8 is Hop Clipper's key. If another program already uses it, see Troubleshooting. The island's own peek shortcut, Ctrl + Alt + Space, can be changed in the settings.

How do I share my look?

Copy your theme code and send it. Anyone can paste it into Hop to wear the same look. The theme gallery has hundreds of ready-made themes and a builder for your own.

Does it work with AI agents other than Claude Code?

Hop follows Claude Code sessions today. See AI Agents, and the roadmap for what's planned.

How do I update?

Hop checks for a new version when your PC starts and once a day, and tells you on the island. You can also install a newer version over the old one, and your settings stay. Scoop, APT and DNF update Hop with the rest of your system. See Updating and Uninstalling.

I found a bug. Where do I report it?

On the issue tracker. Hop is in early development, so every report helps. Say what you did, what you expected, and which version and system you're on.
