Privacy Policy
What Hop reads on your PC, what it sends and where, and what the Windows location and microphone indicators really mean.
Last updated: October 4, 2026. This policy covers Hop Island and Hop Clipper, made by preinfection. Hop is open source, so every statement here can be checked in the code.
Important
Hop has no accounts, no analytics, no telemetry, no ads and no tracking. The apps do not send us your data, and we never sell or share any. What Hop reads stays on your PC, except what a feature you turned on has to send to the service it uses. Every one of those services is listed below.
Location
Hop does not use GPS, the Windows Location service, or your IP address to work out where you are. Weather, rain alerts and prayer times use only the city you type into the settings app yourself. Leave it empty and those features stay off.
"Location in use by: Network Command Shell"
Windows 11 may show this, or "Hop Island", next to the location icon in the taskbar. It does not mean Hop is finding your position. Since Windows 11 24H2, Windows treats the name of your Wi-Fi network as location data, because public databases link network names to places. Hop Island asks Windows for that name (with its built-in netsh tool, "Network Command Shell") so it can show a pop-up when your Wi-Fi connects or drops.
- The network name is compared with the last one and never saved or sent anywhere.
- Hop 0.1.3 checks the name every few seconds, so the icon can flicker on and off. From the next version, Hop reads it only when it starts and when your network actually changes.
- To stop it completely, turn off Wi-Fi under pop-ups in Hop Island's settings.
Microphone and camera
Hop Island never records your microphone or camera. It checks Windows' own list of which apps are using them, to show the privacy dot on the island. It never sees or hears what they capture.
Hop Clipper keeps recording your screen and desktop sound (what you hear) into memory, so F8 can save the last moments. It records your microphone only if you turn on the microphone option in its settings. This recording:
- stays in memory and is thrown away as it gets older;
- is saved only when you press F8 (or the record button), to the folder you chose;
- is never uploaded, unless you drop a clip on the island to share it yourself.
Windows may also briefly show the Settings app using the microphone: that is Windows' own input-level meter on its Sound and Privacy pages, not Hop.
What Hop reads on your PC
None of this leaves your PC.
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your Windows notifications | To show them as island pop-ups. Read from Windows' own notification database. |
| Which apps use the microphone or camera | The privacy dot. |
| The app in front | To hide the island in apps you chose, switch profiles, and notice full-screen games. |
| The song playing | The music player, read from Windows' media controls. |
| New files in Downloads and Screenshots | The download and screenshot pop-ups. |
| Text you copy | Clipboard history. Kept in memory only, gone when Hop closes. |
| The Wi-Fi network name | The Wi-Fi pop-up (see Location). |
| Bluetooth headphones' battery, power and Focus state | Their pop-ups. |
| Claude Code's sign-in token and settings | Only if you connect AI agents: to show your usage, and to add Hop's hooks. |
| Which Claude Code windows are open | Read from Claude Code's own files in your user folder, so the AI agents page lists only the open ones. |
Settings and logs are stored in the folders listed under Files and Settings. Logs record errors, not your activity.
What Hop sends, and where
Hop only contacts these services, and only for features you use:
| Service | When | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub | Update check at start and once a day | A request for the latest version |
| Open-Meteo | Weather and rain alerts, and the city search | The city name you search; the coordinates of the city you picked |
| Aladhan | Prayer times and the Hijri date (off unless you turn them on) | The coordinates of the city you picked, and the date |
| LRCLIB | Lyrics | The song's title, artist, album and length |
| Apple (iTunes Search) | Album covers when the player has none | The song's title and artist |
| ESPN | Sports scores, if you follow a league | Which league's scoreboard to load |
| Your calendar provider | If you paste a calendar link | A request for that link |
| Last.fm | If you connect your Last.fm account | The songs you play (scrobbles) |
| Anthropic | If you connect AI agents | Your own Claude Code token, to fetch your usage |
| Cloudflare | When you run the speed test | A download to measure speed |
| mutate.lol | Only when you drop a file on the island to share it | That file |
Like any website, each service also sees your IP address when Hop contacts it, and its own privacy policy applies. The AI agents connection runs a small server on 127.0.0.1, which only programs on your own PC can reach.
Shared files
A file you drop on the island is uploaded to mutate.lol, run by preinfection. Anonymous uploads can be opened by anyone with the link, show no name, and delete themselves after 7 days. With a personal upload key, the file goes to your own mutate.lol account instead.
Extensions
Extensions are code written by other people and can do things this policy doesn't cover. Install only extensions you trust.
This website
gethop.lol has no analytics, ads or cookies. It is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which handles requests (including your IP address) under Cloudflare's privacy policy. The download button and release notes load the latest version from GitHub's public API.
Children
Hop is not made for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect anything from anyone, of any age.
Your choices
- Every feature that contacts a service can be turned off in the settings app.
- Delete Hop's settings folders to remove everything it stored (see Files and Settings).
- Uninstall Hop at any time from Windows Settings, under Apps.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too. Questions or concerns: open an issue on GitHub. See also the Terms of Use.
